Shamrock Shake and St. Patty’s Day!

LA is having what I would call a normal St. Patty’s day for the midwest. Its pouring rain and cold but folks in the midwest are having a warm sunny St. Patty’s day! Oh well. We’re just slow cooking some corned beef and hanging out today doing some wedding stuff. No St. Patricks day would be complete without at least one Shamrock Shake.

How She Found Her Lucky Charm

Just about one year ago (in April), we were up in the northern California coast.  I was taking Tillie on a surprise birthday trip, of which she had yet to figure out.  We landed in Sonoma airport, but still had to drive another two and half hours towards Mendocino.  The landscape is so beautiful, it is ridiculous and grows dramatically as you travel further north away from San Francisco.  The highways wrap around the craggy mountain sides, and the roads are lined with trees.  Once you near the coastal area, the redwoods and trees grow thicker and the road is a just a little carved sliver in the immense tree forest.  Everything was so saturated green and all the forest floors were lined with spring moss, early flowers and clovers.   We stopped to take pictures and Tillie found a huge patch of clovers.

As I was a nerd, off with my camera taking photos of the clovers, the broken tree limbs, and the enormous redwoods I noticed Tillie was bent over looking intently to the ground.  She said that she was going to find a four leaf clover.  I remember being a child in the huge patches of clovers (much smaller leaves than these) that would grow in my parents yards.  I would always look for four leaf clovers but out of my entire childhood I never found one.  I quickly began to think they were a somewhat of a myth or just that rare that they must be lucky indeed.  I was in the middle of taking some pictures and she shouted that she found one.  I assumed it was that mean old trick that older siblings or friends like to play on you where they take an extra leaf from another clover and hold it with the three leaf clover.  I said “sure, sure” but she insisted it was real.  And sure enough, there was an giant four leaf clover, she said it was right between her feet, she didn’t have to look far or long at all!

They do exist!

The luck of the Irish was with her.  The landscapes along the northern coasts are amazingly beautiful and a must see for any traveler.  Good luck to you and have a happy Saint Patrick’s Day this coming year!  –Jack
